Shinji Mikami is back and this time he is taking no prisoners. The legendary game producer known for his work on the Resident Evil series has returned with The Evil Within.

Players take on the role of Sebastian Castellanos, a police detective called to investigate a horrific massacre at a hospital.  Sebastian finds himself  in deep trouble as his entire unit is murdered before his very eyes, knocked unconscious he wakes up in a nightmarish world reminiscent to hell itself.

Sebastian's character lacks the passion and personality of someone truly caught in a nightmarish trap  and it was hard to believe as we played through that Sebastian was really in any real imminent danger.

Fans familiar with Resident Evil 4 will feel right at home with the control system on the Evil Within. Just like that game, you must rely on stealth to get around undetected. Sneaking up behind enemies is usually the best plan of attack and doing this also allows you to survey the environment for hidden traps scattered along the way.

The monsters in The Evil Within come in all shapes and sizes, with Mikami taking inspiration from his previous games. Expect to come across ghouls, zombies and weird looking creepy deformities as you walk through dark hallways filled with eerie spine tingling effects and procedural monsters that go bump in the night. But despite all of this, The Evil Within wasn't exactly terrifying unless you are sensitive to bloody guts, gore and human entrails.

Visually The Evil Within looks great with loads of effects reminiscent of a classic B style horror movie. At times the tight camera angles did make it hard to get a sense of depth and scale, but this could be forgiven as the games monsters were fun and challenging.

Overall
If you are a fan of Mikami's previous work, then you should consider The Evil Within as paying tribute to the good old days. Although it doesn't quite live up to the expectations of its former self, it is still quite fun and engaging for the most part. Those unfamiliar with Mikami's style will have something to look forward to in this classic arcade style horror genre.
