DRIVECLUB Focusing On More Than Just Winning A Race

We can all relate to this scenario one time or another, where we have all been online on a multiplayer race challenge and a sudden loss of concentration throws us so off course, we resolve in rage-quits. Though the reaction to rage-quitting a match is at times an understandable one, especially when there really is no way of recovering. It is however a real dilemma for game designers as it not only prematurely pulls you out of a match, affecting your fun, but it also affects the overall integrity of the online multiplayer experience.

In fact with most studios integrating social media features into their games, as well as relying on the online data being gathered by multiple players to fairly allocate stats and achievements on leaderboards, rage-quitting is an issue that most developers are seriously looking to tackle once and for all. Although most game developers may never completely eliminate this instinctive human reaction, Evolution Studio's makers of DriveClub have been taking this matter very seriously, devising clever ways to to put an end to rage-quitting in their brand new racer heading to PS4.

In an interview with Game Director Paul Rustchynsky, he said, "I like the idea that winning doesn't have to rely on first place positions." When asked his opinions on tackling the Rage-quitting issue he continued. " I want everybody to enjoy the excitement and thrill of racing. I play a lot of racing games and although I am pretty good. I am not always the player that comes in first position. I like to have fun and take risks rather than obsessing about pulling off the perfect corner each every single time. The issue with drivers like myself and I think we are in the majority, is that racing becomes far too intense and intimidating when the main focus is all about winning."

Continuing on from there Paul said, "It is demoralizing when one or two mistakes on the track end up costing you the race. With DRIVECLUB we set ourselves the task of developing  a better game that deals with this aspect of racing head on. What we have managed to come up with is a race that will constantly give you new targets to aim for, whether you are up in front of the pack or somewhere way behind spinning out of control because you pushed your vehicle to the limit."

In the previous DRIVECLUB video, which explains this innovate idea in more detail we discover that finishing in first place isn't all its cracked up to be in other racers. In DRIVECLUB, players will have the option of partaking in smaller challenges on specific sections of the track- from maintaining a high average of speed, pulling off jaw dropping drifts or even holding a racing line will all affect your overall points in the club, setting new targets for your friends to try and beat.

“With DRIVECLUB, if you are racing online, making a mistake won't mean game over, you won't lose everything and you will still have plenty of dynamic challenges to rank on the various leaderboards," said Paul. " In short, it doesn't benefit you to quit from a race in DRIVECLUB because doing so will not only cost you everything  but also affect your contribution to your clubs overall points. "

Our Thoughts . . .

We think this idea to incorporate a team spirit attitude into DRIVECLUB is a great idea as it just doesn't focus on players who just play to win. It also helps to bring both hardcore and casual racers under one roof as being the best doesn't necessarily mean finishing in first place.
