After playing what we believed was clearly the best game of 2013 on PlayStation 3, we wandered how Naughty Dog was going to improve on their ground breaking achievement in The Last Of Us Remastered Edition on PlayStation 4.

After a few solid hours playing this stunning title yet again, we think Naughty Dog have out done themselves in this gorgeous, post apocalyptic pièce de résistance. (aka - Masterpiece) For those who have played The Last Of Us before on PS3, we urge you to take a second look and for those yet to experience it, you are in for a real treat!

So What Has Changed From PS3 to PS4?

The first major noticeable difference has to to be TLOUR frame-rate upgrade which has been bumped up from PlayStation 3's max limit of 30 frames per second at 720p resolution to PlayStation 4's standard 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second. For those who have played the original before, it may take a little getting used to seeing it like this, but the longer we played, the more we appreciated these smoother, polished visual upgrades.

Improving the frame rate not only increases the visuals, but enhances user experience as well. Playing TLOUR at a higher framerate on PS4, made the game feel much more smoother, reactive and precise compared to its predecessor on PlayStation 3. Naughty Dog has however been very generous enough to include a feature that can lock the frame rate to its original 30 frames per second if you prefer, but we reckon once you allow yourself and eyes to adjust to the graphic improvements, you will never look at The Last Of Us Remastered any other way again.

Visually Appealing

PlayStation 4's extra horse-power is like the cherry on what is already a delicious looking and tasting cake. Though the graphics was already great on PS3, the image we witnessed on our HD Sony Bravia 4K here at the office made The Last Of Us Remastered appear crisp and sharper than ever before. From the enhanced light and shadow effects, to clothing, landscape, skin and blood textures, you could truly see the difference.  As we began our play through, there were moments when we just had to stop and admire some of the major and minor upgrades in front of us that gave The Last Of Us a zest of new life.

Photo Mode

With such tragic beauty all around, Remastered's brand new Photo Mode could't have come at a better time. Photo Mode allows you to take control of the camera, altering what you see by pulling focus or changing filters to help you capture the kind of picture  worthy of Natural Geographic's front cover.  It is not unusual to come across remarkable visuals in The Last Of Us Remastered, like the first time you see natures ever evolving wildlife outgrowing what was once a man-made landmark within the city's walls.  Another major change from TLOU on PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 is in its control mechanics. Naughty Dog has re-tweaked the trigger buttons from R1 and L1 on PS3 to a more familiar R2 and L2 on PS4's DualShock 4, but you do have the option of keeping it as is if thats your preference.

Deeper Sensory Immersion
The DualShock 4's audio speaker can now be used to playback sound effects like audio diaries and turning on and off your torchlight, thus creating a deeper sensory immersion and user experience within the game. You can now also access Joel's backpack by clicking the control pads center button too.

Great Additional Content
When The Last Of Us first came out on PS3, there were a few great DLC that soon followed like the Left Behind single player story, loads of new maps and multiplayer modes each sold separately. We were pleased to discover all these great extras were bundled in the remastered edition making it more than worth the RRP of $49.96

Overall

The Last Of Us on PlayStation 3 was groundbreaking for several reasons. Naughty Dog not only created a game with cutting edge graphics, pushing PS3 beyond what most thought possible, but they created a compelling story worthy of Hollywoods biggest honor and achievement. The Last Of Us was thought provoking, engaging, smart and a lot of fun to play. We think the Remastered edition highlights these outstanding qualities even further, setting a bench mark for what we expect to see from other AAA games on PlayStation 4.
