Every Angle Matters Says Playstation 4 Designer Tetsu Sumii

When Sony Unveiled the PS4 back in February, there was a lot of discussion within the gaming industry about its graphics capability, its speed, how much storage it can handle, etc. . . But as Fred Dutton Manager of Playstation blog explains in a recent interview he had with Playstation 4's designer Tetsu Summii, "There are two sides to a hardware's design. Interior and exterior."
Tetsu Summii PS4's Chief Designer said, "When we began product design for the Playstation 4. We didn't start with the next-gens shape in mind. Instead we brainstormed on creating a new brand identity through the product." Hinting that his initial idea was different to what the world has now come to see as the PS4.
Regardless Tetsu Summii's unwavering concept of what he believed the PS4 will eventually be, "is clearly evident in the bold, striking lines and contours of its finished design," said Fred Dutton.
“I just wanted to make something that was simple, yet distinct for the living room." Said Tetsu Summii. " Products can sometimes be too complicated in its exterior design. It should be simple." He emphasised.
Summii wanted to make sure that the console looked good from any angle gamers wished to display it, either from an upright view point or flat on its belly.
"I thought about the concept horizontally as well as vertical,” he says. “I thought about the design as a whole, from a 360 degree angle. I wanted the back to be just as beautiful as the front." Said Tetsu Summii.
Gamers familiar with the Playstation 2 design, will spot a few similarities with the new PS4 concept, and that was all part of Summi's intentions. Tetsu Summii originally from Sony's mobile phone division, is a newcomer to console design, and we think his fresh approach certainly helps to bring a new striking bold looking to the next-gen console.
“One of my main tasks was to create a single PlayStation identity," he says, "I wasn't just considering how the console would look, I was also thinking about the DualShock 4 controller, the DualShock4 charging dock, the mono headset, Vertical stand and the PS Vita. I was thinking about everything. A new PlayStation identity." says Sumii.
Summii believed the PlayStation brand needed a brand new image to go in line with its new console. A vision towards the future of Sony, not just its Computer Entertainment division.
We think the PS4 is a beautifully crafted machine, from its striking contours and angles, to its simple architectural landscaping both from an upright and flat position and we at PS4.sx gives Tetsu Summii two thumbs up for his brilliant work.
