Destiny Tips 4: How To Find The Best legendary and Exotic Gear
September 21st, 2014 By Maya Mayfield.
You have just completed every mission in Destiny and are now on level 20, but don't celebrate too quickly as your adventure has really just begun. Destiny is all about the incredibly difficult end-game content which includes things like the newly unlocked level 26 "Vault Glass" raid.
So how exactly do you get these legendary gear and exotic weapons?
Hopefully with this detailed guide you will be the envy of your friends as you acquire armor and weapons that lets you fight like a legend in Destiny's more challenging stages. It's worth keeping in mind that although you can equip any amount of legendary gear, you can only have one piece of exotic weapon and one exotic armor equipped at any single time.
Let's Begin:
1.) Strange Coins
One way to gain currency for legendary and exotic gear is by finding strange coins. These coins are very rare and appear randomly but can be obtained by participating in weekly heroic missions and Strike missions. Once you have collected these strange coins, you can make your way to the Tower to locate Xur - Agent of the Nine who sells these exotic armor and weapons in exchange for strange coins.
2.) Mote of Light
Mote of Light are similar to strange coins in that they are acquired via randomized drops. Unlike strange coins, Mote of light can also be acquired through experience points once you reach level 20, so make sure to keep completing missions and bounties in order to get them.
Once you have Mote of Light, you can use them to either buy items specific to your class from the Speaker at the tower or spend them with Xur in return for an exotic engram. (Note Although acquiring an exotic engram does guarantee an exotic gear, it may not be suited to your particular Guardian class so bare that in mind to avoid disappointments.) This however is still the best way of spending those Mote of Light in hopes of finding that perfect Exotic or Legendary gear.
3.) Farming
This method is the least appealing way of gaining legendary gear and exotic items, but it's one of the most effective. What you have to do is go to a low level location like the Moon or Earth, find an area filled with a large number of enemies and clear them out collecting any items they drop along the way. Once done leave the area, then go right back and do it all over again. In fact you can do this as many times as you want. It can be very repetitive but worth the time and effort for those exotic and legendary gear.
The reason this method is so effective is because the drop rate for loot within the game is consistent right across the different enemies you encounter on all stages. For example annihilating a level 7 Fallen will give you an equal chance of discovering a legendary gear as destroying a level 23 Cabal on planet Mars. Making your way to a lower level area and killing large groups of enemies will take very little effort in exchange for getting better gear as fast as possible.
4.) Marks
Marks are a special type of currency only acquired from PVP and PVE missions. Participating in Strikes and daily heroic missions will see you grabbing the vanguard marks in no time, which is then used to purchase legendary PVE gear. Getting involved in Destiny's various PVP modes within the Crucible will grant you the Crucible marks, which can then be used to purchase legendary PVP weapons and armor.
This method is slow but has proven to be the most consistent from our experience to attaining legendary gear. If you are searching for other Crucible and Vanguard gear, other than the standard versions on offer, you can also buy 3 other gears from New Monarchy, Future War Cult and Dead Orbit
Unfortunately just pile stocking marks will not be enough. You also have to farm reputation by completing patrols, PVP and bounties in order to acquire a specific rank within a particular faction to gain access to that available gear.
Once you have reached a reputation level of 2, you will be able to purchase armor across all the factions, while level 3 reputation will give you access to new weapons. Grinding for reputation marks isn't very exciting, but do keep in mind that you will also be involved in Crucible and Strike missions where you will also gain loot and legendary items soon enough.
5.) Exotic Weapon Bounties
Acquiring an exotic weapon bounty seems to be a rare occurrence, but we think it's triggered once you complete a certain amount of bounties at a time. Exotic weapons and gear are a lot more valuable than legendary gear as they feature a higher number of possibilities to upgrade. These exotic gear also look freaking cool, making them one of the most sought after items in the world of Destiny. If you ever get a chance to get one of these exotic gear make sure to choose wisely as they do appear once in a blue moon.
Each bounty is associated with a specific type of exotic weapon for example:
"A Voice in the Wilderness" will reward you with an exotic heavy machine gun.
"Shattered Memory Fragment" bounty allows you to get an exotic pulse rifle.
"Toland's Legacy" will give you another exotic pulse rifle.
"An Unknown Patron" will give you access to an exotic scout rifle.
Despite which ever exotic bounty you pick, your mission will not be easy as you will have to work through several levels before claiming your prize, which in our opinion is worth the effort in the end.
