Sony Playstation Boss Jack Tretton believes the PS4 will survive as long as the current gen-hardware has.

In a discussion with Fortune, Tretton was question on how long he thought the PS4 will last, and if it would be as long as this current generation.
"I believe so," Tretton replied.
"The irony is we didn't discontinue the PS1 and PS2 for lack of consumer interest. They were discontinued because we didn't have a way to manufacture them for profit anymore. As technology increased, the cost of goods and chipsets became increasingly difficult to manufacture cost-effectively."
"So in the case of the PS1 and PS2, we still had a lot of demand, if we could have continued manufacturing them profitably. There is really no reason, why it could not still be out there on retail shelves."
PS3 was released in Japan on November 2006 but current hardware consoles started much earlier than that, as the Xbox 360 was released in November 2005. So with current-gen of hardware still manufacturing at least eight years, Tretton is confident PS4 will have the same longevity.
Tretton also said how the PS4 is comparing to the PS3 launch: "We are in a much better position. There are a couple of important factors: We came to market a little later than our formidable competitor in Microsofts Xbox 360 - we won't be doing that this time. We came to market at $599 - that is obviously not going to happen again. Despite all of that, we ended up selling 70 million units. There were valuble lessons learned in things we did not want to repeat. I really am looking forward this time around to bringing the PS4 into market on schedule and at $399."
