Sony is making history selling 2.1 million PS4 units globally since its November 15th launch in the US, but what makes the PS4 so different from its PS3 predecessor? While Online retailers like Gamestop and Amazon are struggling to keep up with high consumer pre-order demands for the PS4. There are some gamers out there who won't be trading in their old Playstation 3 consoles just yet. After all the excitement from recent tech shows revealing brand new Playstation 4 game play demo's. Some people are still not sold, and they want to know what the core fundamental differences are between the old PS3, and the new PS4.
The PlayStation 4 is the brand new console, but the Playstation 3 does have an enormous catalogue of games to choose from. As developers create newer titles for the PS4 it will mean PS3 games will inevitably get cheaper. Although some of the graphics from the PlayStation 3 games won't be as visually stunning as the newer Playstation 4, that doesn't mean the games will be any less exciting to play, take the brand new Grand theft Auto V as a prime example. From some of the games we saw at recent award shows, there really wasn't much of a difference between the two consoles visually. We suspect games graphics will obviously continue to improve, between the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4, later in the PS4's life cycle as developers get to grips with some of the "Rich Feature set," Mark Cerny mentioned in an article we covered about the "Future of PS4's Graphics."
So today we will be comparing the differences between Playstation 3 and Playstation 4?
PS3 vs. PS4 Head to Head
Price
The Playstation 4 standard package will be retailing for $399 on release date, this would only include the DualShock 4 controller.
You can click here to check out the bundle deals.
The PlayStation 3 currently retails for $299 with a number of bundles thrown into the mix to make the price more appealing.
PS3 bundles at Gamestop including 3 games and a single controller, and 60 days on PS Plus subscription which gives gamers access to a lot more free games online.
Hardware
The new PlayStation 4 utilises AMD Jaguar system-on-chip, that is very similar to the Xbox One and gaming PCs.
The hardware isn't backward compatible, but it does make game development easier especially for independent developers. .
The PlayStation 3 uses a custom Cell processor that also breaks backwards compatibility with the Playstation 2, but can play Playstation 1 games. This custom Cell processor did make things very difficult for programmers to write for the PS3 initially, but over time the process got much easier to use.
Both the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 will come with a 500 Gb of Hard Drive storage space, which can also be increased if they so wish.
Games
The Playstation 3 has been in circulation for seven years, and has a large amount of great games available, including titles like. Heavy Rain, The Show 13, MLB, Gran Turismo 5, The God of War series. Uncharted 2, and recent titles like, Grand Theft Auto 5, Grand Turismo 6 the Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls.
It's also worth bearing in mind that most of the Playstation 4 games we did see at E3 2013 will also be making their way to the Playstation 3 also. Games like: Fifa 14, Watch Dogs, Madden 25, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.
Controller
The PlayStation 4 uses the new DualShock 4 controller, which has a few enhancements to the current DualShock 3 Playstation 3 model. The joy sticks on the DualShock 4 controller are now concave instead of convex. This makes it much easier to grip. The trigger buttons have also gone through drastic improvements, making it easier for action shooters. Sony also added a touch pad to the top, a share button and a few other modifications to the grip.
When we tested the controller controller at this years Comic Con 2013 we could instantly feel the difference.
The PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 is similar in design to that of the Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 controllers, except for the addition of the motion sensors and wireless feature Sony included.
Services
The PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 will offer similar online services, with only two major differences. Playstation 4 will have access to Flixster, and players who want to go online with their PS4 to play will have to pay for the PS plus subscription. Though the benefit to the $5 dollar monthly subscription fee, will be a bunch of free games including the new DriveClub: PS Plus Edition at Launch and more pS3 games updated regularly.
