Turtle Rock Devs Four Is Magic Number in Evolve Game
January 25th, 2014, By Dean HowardTurtle Rock's creative director Chris Ashton will be the first to tell you if it ain't broken don't try and fix it, especially when it comes to their new 4 versus 1 shooter Evolve. This statement is further justified after Valve had got their hands on Turtle Rock's Left 4 Dead and despite the dev team saying it wouldn't work, Valve still tried but failed to increase the number of players from four to five and six, eventually shipping the game with four playable characters.
In an interview with Game Informer Chris Ashton explains his theory of the magic 4 number of players by saying, most people tend to track three friends at once. Explaining his concept like a triangle, Ashton describes players to his front, left and right. This way he is able to keep track of players health meters, thus allowing him to retain a certain level of control on the battle environment. The moment a 4th addition player is added including himself making it a total of 5, Chris says this gets very confusing and chaotic as it now becomes a lot more difficult to track four friends instead of three.
"The player navigating the gigantic monster will already have their work cut out for them as trying to keep track of four enemies is where the challenge will be, "says Chris.
Evolve will be released this fall on PS4, Xbox One and PC and is available to Pre-Order from the link below now.
