March 18th 2014, by Maya MayfieldSony's Big Boss Man Shuhei Yoshida President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios has just unveiled Project Morpheus, SCE's new virtual reality prototype (VR) system that works with the PS4 at this years GDC 2014 event! President Yoshida said during his speech that, "Virtual reality is the next step in innovation from Sony Computer Entertainment and we believe it will shape and redefine the future of games forever."
"Project Morpheus has long been a dream," said President Yoshida, in regards to the Virtual Reality Unit device and its application to game development. Project Morpheus will deliver unparalleled sense of presence, taking players even further into the immersive realm of gaming, affecting not just what they see, but their emotional sense of being as well. The current prototype reveled today for Project Morpheus includes a head mounted display with 1080p crystal clear resolution and a 90 degree field of view.
Project Morpheus virtual reality headset also features an accelerometer and gyroscope sensors built directly into the head mounted unit. These sensors work perfectly with the PlayStation Camera accurately tracking head orientation and movements, so as your head rotates from left to right, or up and down, the image of the virtual world also rotates intuitively in real-time.
Project Morpheus also includes Sony's new 3 dimensional (3D) audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions changing in real-time depending on exactly where your head is orientated. In addition to working with the PlayStation Camera, Project Morpheus also works with PlayStation Move and the DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play Virtual reality experience for the user.
Project Morpheus Virtual Reality VR Prototype Headset is a culmination of over three and a half years of work by SCE's R&D team with a single goal to creating the best VR gaming unit the world has ever seen. This prototype will serve as the first development kit for Playstation 4 developers, keen to explore this new and innovative medium in gaming development.
GDC 2014 attendees will be able to take a look at Project Morpheus in action at Sony Computer Entertainment booth though a collection of ted demonstrations.
