We have been aware that PS4's Dualshock 4 can be connected to PS3 but this could only be achieved via a USB wire. Well it now appears that the recent updates by Sony now allows gamers to connect their DualShock4 Controller to their PlayStation 3 consoles wirelessly as seen in this video below by youtube user SuperOriginalA.

Discovered on Reddit, this smart little trick doesn't actually recognize the DS4 controller as an official Sony product when paired, but it does still work.

The step by step guide to doing this is as follows:

  • First connect Dualshock 4 with wire to PlayStation then turn it on.
  • Go into Accessory settings mode.
  • Choose Manage Bluetooth Devices, and start  scanning for new devices.
  • Unplug the DualShock 4 controller
  • While the bluetooth device is scanning for a new device, press and hold the PS & Share buttons on the DS4 pad.
  • When the light flashes quickly on DualShock 4, plug it back in and choose the Wireless Controller option.
  • Let the registration process complete before unplugging  the USB connection again.

As mentioned this isn't a fully recognized way of doing this and as a result the PS button and the vibrate Sixaxis functions will not work, but at least for now you don't have to be bound to a USB connection to use the DualShock 4 controller on your PS3. Give it a try and tell us what you think.
