Bring On The Competition
August 14th, 2014 By Dean HowardThe announcement of Rise Of Tomb Raider exclusive to Xbox One has driven PlayStation and PC fans crazy, with many even threatening to go as far as raping the voice actress of Lara Croft and attacking the games writers. More sane minded fans have threatened to boycott the series, forcing Square Enix to go back and forth with Microsoft on the undisclosed agreement before changing the permanent exclusive deal to a timed release duration.
Lets face it, as much as people like saying why choose one console over the other, and can't we all just get along, singing kumbaya under the forgiven tree. We deep down love the idea of the competition, the banter against one fan boy to another as we go back and forth on why PS4 dominates Xbox One and vice versa.
Lets not forget developers are gamers too and though for sake of business most would never publicly tell you which console they prefer, the reality is that they do have a preference. I am not saying this decision to have Rise of Tomb Raider on Xbox One was based on preference, but what it does do is set a challenge to other developers out there working on similar IP's exclusive to PlayStation 4's platform to step their game up and bring it on!
It's obvious Microsoft's Xbox One is struggling to even come close to making a dent on Sony's recent 10 Million units sold worldwide and their desperate attempt to grab the Tomb Raider franchise is one way of trying to even out the odds, converting more gamers to the dark side of Microsofts force.
As gamers we often complain of lack of originality from todays developers, but one thing to consider is this announcement will no doubt create a sense of urgency and zeal amongst other developers who will also be releasing their exclusive titles around the same time as Rise of Tomb Raider. At least that's what I hope this recent news has inspired one of my favorite PS4 exclusive developers to do.
