Playstation Gold Wireless Gaming Headset For PS4, PS3 and PS Vita: Review
February 21st, 2014, by Maya Mayfield
The Gold Wireless Headset is a great additional accessory to your PS4, PS3, and PS Vita systems. The stylish, rounded design is a welcome change to that of the Pulse's previous glossy black, metallic trim. The headset feels a lot lighter than it looks and extremely comfortable on the head. The headphones cups are very big covering the entire span of the ears and the padding is thin enough to sense the plastic edges, where the cups connect with its backing, but still nice and snug regardless.
The Playstation Gold Wireless headset is compatible to work with the Playstation 4, Playstation 3, and Playstation Vita. Connecting the headset to your PS4 and PS3 is an easy plug and play hassle-free set-up. Simply attach the small dongle into a USB port, turn on the headset and away you go.
Functions like Volume adjustment and mute controls operated from the headphones will be displayed on screen, like the previous Pulse headset use to do. Sony has also introduced a companion app available at no additional charge on the Playstation store which is compatible with both the Gold Wireless and Pulse headsets. With the companion app you will be able to choose default factory sound effects that can be downloaded to the headset. You can even create your own sound settings with a 3 band EQ.
This customization settings are limited to a few effects but still a great addition to tuning sounds to your preference. By turning the power switch past the audio profile tab you will be able to hear your customized setting preferences. Connecting the Gold Wireless headset to the Playstation Vita works slightly different with a detachable 3.5mm headset jack, the cable jack is also compatible to work with other mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Android phones. The headset's microphone function works very well, sounding very clear and audible during phone test calls.
The sound Quality of the PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset is fantastic, reaching the type of standard you would expect from a $100 dollar headset. The sound is crystal clear, with an overall balance that doesn't distort even at the peak of its highest volume limit. The 7.1 Virtual surround feature can be switch on and off by holding a specific button. In test runs playing Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the sound felt spacious, sharp and clean giving the best simulation in surround sound I've heard in any gaming headset so far.
I personally prefer the virtual surround sound mode on, especially when playing games as it does make the gaming experience feel immersive as you notice details in sound effects that would otherwise be missed without it. Turning the surround sound off doesn't take much away from the quality but again this is based entirely on personal choice and preference. The volume switch can be located on the rear of the left ear cup and a sound/chat balance switch at the front. The mute button is directly below the volume switch but maybe hard to notice due to the silky smooth design.
You can charge the Gold Wireless Stereo Headset via a micro USB port located on the bottom of the left side of the headset via a small cable also included along with an audio input jack in the box. You can get around 8 hours of use from the headset, with a few hours of charge in between. You can also charge the headset while you play using the Dualshock 4 micro USP cable. The gold wireless headset ear cups can be folded in-wards for easy storage in its very own black drawstring bag, when you're done.
Our Verdict
If you live with other people and enjoy playing games at night without risking the wrath of room mates, parents, siblings and neighbors, then we highly recommend investing in the Gold Wireless headset as it pretty much covers everything you would need and expect from a quality gaming headset at the cost of $99 dollars. It's light, durable and extremely comfortable to wear with a sound that was built for gaming.
